A goldsmith allegedly embezzled 1,497 grams of pure gold, valued at ₹1.3 crore, which was given to him for making mangalsutras and fled from Zaveri Bazaar. The LT Marg Police have registered a case of fraud against the accused, identified as Mir Arif Ghulam, and have launched a manhunt to trace him.
Kedar Krishna Mamde, a jeweller residing with his family in Kalachowki, owns a wholesale jewellery business. He operates his shop, Kanak Sparsh Jewels, located in the DD Jewellers building on First Agiary Lane in Zaveri Bazaar. Mir Ghulam, known to Mamde, was regularly entrusted with crafting gold ornaments.
Between January 8 and January 30, 2025, Mamde handed over 1,497 grams of pure gold, worth ₹1.3 crore, to Ghulam for making mangalsutras. Ghulam assured delivery of the finished jewellery within 10 to 15 days. However, he failed to deliver the ornaments within the promised time frame.
Upon realizing the delay, Mamde tried contacting Ghulam, only to find his mobile phone switched off. Further inquiries revealed that Ghulam had fled with the gold from the workshop. Confirming his suspicion of fraud, Mamde approached the LT Marg Police and lodged a complaint.
Following an initial investigation, the police registered a case of cheating and embezzlement against Mir Ghulam. Special teams have been formed to track down the absconding goldsmith. Police suspect Ghulam may have fled to his native place, and a team is expected to be dispatched there soon.
