Mumbai: Husband-Wife Duo Among Three Booked for Blackmailing Businessman, Demanding Rs 15 Lakh

The Kurar Police have registered a case against three individuals, including a husband-wife duo, for allegedly blackmailing a businessman and demanding Rs 15 lakh as extortion. The accused have been identified as Roshni, Lakshmi, and Shubham. According to police sources, the trio is part of a habitual blackmailing gang and has been previously booked for similar offences. Officials stated that an investigation is underway, and arrests will be made soon.

The complainant, a 39-year-old resident of Malad, owns an imitation jewellery business. He runs a factory at Kurar Village, Appapada area, where several women are employed. It was here that he came in contact with Roshni Yadav, who used to collect raw material from his factory and return it after processing. Their professional interaction soon developed into a friendship and later into a romantic relationship. Eventually, both of them got involved in a consensual physical relationship. In December 2024, Roshni married Shubham.

On January 14, Roshni allegedly called the complainant and informed him that she was four months pregnant. When he congratulated her, she claimed that the child was his. She then allegedly demanded Rs 15 lakh to settle the matter and threatened to file a false case of sexual assault if he refused to pay. The complainant, shocked and terrified, began receiving repeated calls from Roshni pressuring him for money.

A few days later, Roshni visited the complainant along with another woman, Lakshmi. Both women reiterated the demand for Rs 15 lakh, saying it was to avoid further consequences. They warned him to face the repercussions if he did not comply. Subsequently, Shubham—Roshni’s husband—also began threatening the businessman and allegedly demanded Rs 3.5 lakh.

Unable to bear the mental harassment, the businessman approached the Kurar Police Station on January 25 and filed a formal complaint against all three accused.

During the preliminary investigation, police found that the accused trio had been involved in similar criminal activities in the past. Other individuals had also reportedly lodged complaints against them. Following verification of the details, police registered a case against Roshni, Lakshmi, and Shubham under relevant sections for blackmail and criminal intimidation. Further investigation is ongoing, and police officials have confirmed that arrests are imminent.
