The Western Railway (WR) of Mumbai division will impose a maximum fine of ₹500 for spitting and littering at local station premises. Previously, the fine was Rs 200, but it has now been increased to ₹500. According to the Railway Act, fines for offenders can range from Rs 100 to Rs 500, as reported by The Indian Express.

According to the Indian Express report, between April 2024 and January 2025, the WR reported 3,283 cases of spitting and littering within station premises, collecting a penalty of Rs 6 lakh. Additionally, WR penalised housekeeping contractors Rs 17.84 lakh for failing to meet cleanliness standards at stations.

WR has appointed eight contractors, from Churchgate to Virar, at an annual cost of ₹12.84 crore to maintain station cleanliness. As part of its Pavitra initiative, WR also conducts virtual inspections at random stations, in addition to regular on-site inspections.
