Every day, thousands of commuters travel between Mumbai and Nashik for work-related purposes, relying heavily on express trains like the Panchavati Express. Now, a significant development may soon bring relief to these daily travelers. Authorities have announced a strong possibility of launching a dedicated local train service between the two cities. This move comes after a major obstacle—Kasara Ghat, a critical and challenging section on the route—has nearly been cleared, paving the way for improved rail connectivity between Mumbai and Nashik. Central Railway has already drafted a preliminary project plan, with an estimated cost of Rs 4,000 crore, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening regional rail infrastructure.
The long-standing challenge of navigating the steep gradients and difficult terrain of the Kasara Ghat region is being addressed with a new railway route. The proposed line between Manmad and Kasara is awaiting final approval and includes the construction of two large tunnels. Designed to reduce steep gradients, this upgraded infrastructure is expected to make train travel not only more efficient for operators but also significantly more comfortable and convenient for passengers who rely on this route daily.

Stretching 140 kilometers, the new railway line between Kasara Ghat and Manmad will run parallel to the existing track. A key highlight of this project includes increasing the diameter of tunnels to accommodate the new line, which will boost speed and reduce travel time. Once work is completed on the ghat section between Igatpuri and Kasara, the possibility of operating a local train service between Nashik and Mumbai becomes more realistic. This project represents a significant step toward better transportation infrastructure in the region.
In addition to laying a new parallel track, four new railway stations have been proposed: New Nashik Road, New Padli, Vaitarnanagar, and Chinchalkhaire. These stations will enhance accessibility and convenience for commuters along the route. The entire project also includes the construction of 12 tunnels, which will help reduce fuel consumption and transit time.
