Mumbai: SRA to Allot Homes in Joint Names of Husband and Wife

The Slum Redevelopment Authority (SRA) has announced that it will allot houses jointly in the names of both husband and wife to ensure a sense of security for women. Until now, SRA houses were allocated solely in the husband's name as the head of the family. This often led to legal complications for widows trying to claim ownership after their husband's death.

To provide legal protection and remove these hurdles, the SRA has made it mandatory for all competent authorities to include both husband and wife in the eligibility list. Additionally, the allotment letter will now bear both names. Cooperative housing societies have also been directed to grant joint membership to both spouses.

In many cases, the husband passes away before the completion of an SRA project, creating legal difficulties for the family in claiming the house. To address this issue, the SRA has now ensured that ownership will be granted jointly to both husband and wife.

Meanwhile, the state government has tasked the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) with completing 17 stalled SRA projects. Priority will be given to projects where the eligibility process for local residents has been completed. This will enable faster tendering and construction work upon receiving the Letter of Intent (LOI) from the SRA.

MHADA is yet to complete unfinished SRA projects in areas such as Goregaon, Bandra, Kurla, Borivali, and Dahisar. To meet this requirement, MHADA will construct approximately 25,000 houses, out of which more than 15,000 will be available for sale after rehabilitating eligible families.
