Mumbai: Three Arrested for Assaulting Police Team in Dharavi

Three men were arrested for assaulting a police team that had arrived to resolve a dispute in the Dharavi area. The accused, identified as Amrut Asnale, Avinash Asnale, and Rupkar Shetty, were taken into custody by Dharavi Police. They were produced before the Bandra court, which remanded them to police custody. During the attack, Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) Vikas Shelar sustained a fractured finger and was treated at Sion Hospital.

PSI Shelar, a resident of Chunabhatti, is posted at Dharavi Police Station. On Saturday at around 9:30 PM, he was patrolling the area with a colleague when the Mumbai Police Control Room received a report of a fight near the Goldfield building on Sant Rohidas Marg, Parsi Chawl in Dharavi. Acting on the information, a police team, including a constable named Pawar, rushed to the spot and found three young men abusing and assaulting an individual.

The police officers intervened and instructed the trio to calm down and go home. However, two of them began arguing with PSI Shelar and his team. The officers warned them against misbehaving with the police, stating that strict action would be taken. Despite repeated warnings, one of the accused pushed PSI Shelar and questioned, "So what if you are the police?" The situation escalated as the trio attacked the officers, assaulting them with hands and sticks. PSI Shelar sustained injuries during the altercation.

Realizing the aggressiveness of the accused, the police used force to detain them and took them to the police station for questioning. The investigation revealed their identities as Amrut Asnale, Avinash Asnale, and Rupkar Shetty, all residents of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, Yellappa Chawl, and Jai Hanuman Chawl in Dharavi. Amrut and Avinash are brothers, with Amrut working in a private firm and Avinash employed as a driver. Rupkar runs a clothing business.

Based on PSI Shelar’s complaint, Dharavi Police registered a case against the trio under charges of obstructing a public servant in duty, abusing and assaulting police personnel, and interfering in government work. Following this, all three were arrested and presented in court.
