Rs 526 crore fines imposed for traffic violations
44 lakh motorists yet to pay penalties
Rs 369 crore remains unpaid
Mumbai Traffic Police has taken action against 65,12,846 motorists for violating traffic rules in the last 13 months (from January 1, 2024, to February 5, 2025). A total fine of Rs 526 crore was imposed, but only Rs 157 crore has been recovered so far, leaving a pending amount of Rs 369 crore. This information came to light through an RTI query filed by activist Anil Galgali.
According to Mumbai Traffic Police, enforcement was carried out across 26 categories of traffic violations, with 41 traffic divisions and one multimedia division overseeing the crackdown. However, out of over 65 lakh violators, only 20,99,396 have paid their fines, while a staggering 44,13,450 motorists are yet to clear their dues.
The police also took action against 47 motorists for using unauthorized flicker and amber lights, imposing a fine of Rs 23,500. However, only seven violators have paid a total of Rs 3,500 so far. The highest number of cases were recorded in the Marine Drive area, where 32 vehicles were penalized.
RTI activist Anil Galgali acknowledged the traffic police's efforts but pointed out that a shortage of officers and staff is affecting fine collection. He emphasized the need for a special recovery drive to penalize defaulters.
"The police should send digital notices to offenders and initiate vehicle seizure proceedings against major defaulters," Galgali suggested.
