Mumbai Weather Update: Light Rain Expected on April 1-2; Yellow Alert Issued for Thane and Raigad
Mumbai Weather Forecast: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain or thunderstorms in Mumbai on Tuesday and Wednesday as temperatures continue to soar. However, the showers are not expected to bring significant relief from the heat. According to a report by Hindustan Times, Sushma Nair, a scientist at IMD, attributed the weather change to a cyclonic circulation in the lower troposphere over Marathwada and nearby regions. While Mumbai may receive light rainfall, areas like Thane could witness more intense showers. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Thane and Raigad, warning of light to moderate rain along with gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. Nashik may also experience hailstorms during this period. If the rainfall occurs, it will be classified as pre-monsoon showers. Nair explained that any rain between March 1 and May 31 falls under this category.

Despite the expected rainfall, temperatures will likely remain between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels may push minimum temperatures to around 25 degrees Celsius. The rain forecast is linked to a weather trough stretching from south Chhattisgarh to north interior Tamil Nadu. This system allows northeasterly winds to flow at an altitude of 0.9 kilometers above sea level, affecting parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka.
IMD officials noted that unseasonal rainfall in Mumbai during March and April is not uncommon. Pre-monsoon showers occur due to shifting wind patterns. Historical records show similar rainfall events, including 17.1 mm on March 21, 2023. While the city may experience scattered showers, no significant temperature drop is expected in the coming days. On Monday, the Santacruz weather observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 33.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24 degrees Celsius, which is 1.2 degrees above normal. Colaba reported a high of 32.7 degrees Celsius and a low of 25.2 degrees Celsius, also exceeding the normal range by 1.2 degrees.
