Mumbai Woman Loses Rs 20 Crore After Receiving Fake Call About Aadhar Card Misuse

Cyber fraud is increasing in Maharashtra with each passing day. An 86-year-old woman from South Mumbai lost over Rs 20 crore in cyber fraud. The fraudsters convinced her that her Aadhar Card was being used for illegal activities and forced her to transfer money to different bank accounts to settle the case, reported The Indian Express.

The fraudsters managed to loot Rs 20.25 crore from the victim from December 26, 2024, to March 3, 2025. She got a call from the scammer, who posed as a police official. The caller then said that a bank account was created in India, linked with her Aadhar card and her personal information was used too. He then said that the account was being used to transfer money for illegal activities. The caller then threatened her and said that legal action would be taken against her and the case would involve her family members as well.

The scammers, throughout this time, instructed the victim to stay under digital arrest. They prevented her from sharing the information with anyone. They then pressured her to transfer money into different bank accounts if she wanted to clear her name.

The report further mentioned that when the victim realised she had been scammed, she filed an official complaint with the police. After this, the police immediately started investigating the matter. The police tracked all the activities and arrested the scammers.

Police officials also urged people to stay alert and not fall prey to such scamsters. If you suspect that your Aadhar card is being misused or you get a call for the same, you can follow the following steps and check if it is true or not:

• Visit the myAadhaar Portal: Go to the official myAadhaar website (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/).
• Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the captcha code displayed on the screen.
• Click on “Login With OTP.” An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP to access your account.
• Once logged in, go to the “Authentication History” option.
• Select the date range for which you want to review the authentication history.
• Carefully go through the log to check for any unfamiliar or suspicious transactions. If you notice any unauthorized activity, report it immediately to UIDAI by calling 1947 or emailing help@uidai.gov.in.
