Vashi to Mankhurd New Flyover Ready for Opening, Set to Ease Major Traffic Congestion
Motorists traveling towards Mumbai via the Vashi Creek Bridge are set to receive much-needed relief. Of the two new flyovers being constructed on the Sion-Panvel route, the one for traffic moving from Vashi towards Mankhurd has been completed. Now, only its inauguration remains, after which it will be open to commuters.
The existing six-lane bridge over the Vashi Creek, which connects Mankhurd and Navi Mumbai, was opened for traffic in 1994. However, with a significant rise in vehicle numbers over the years, the bridge has become inadequate, leading to heavy congestion—especially around the Vashi toll plaza.
To address these traffic woes, two additional three-lane bridges have been constructed parallel to the existing structure by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). These new bridges are designed to ease congestion and improve travel efficiency on this crucial route.
The bridge facilitating traffic from Mankhurd to Vashi was opened for public use in October. Now, construction on the second bridge, which will serve vehicles traveling from Vashi towards Mankhurd, has been completed. Final touches, such as painting the bridge and its pillars, are currently underway. According to a senior MSRDC official, the new bridge will be operational soon, significantly reducing traffic congestion on the Vashi Creek Bridge and ensuring a smoother, faster commute—especially during peak office hours.
