Why Will Mumbai Airport Temporarily Suspend Flight Operations on May 8?
One of India's largest airports, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), has stated that it will temporarily suspend flight operations on May 8, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, to perform its yearly pre-monsoon runway maintenance. During this time, the main runway and the secondary runway will not be in use. A key component of CSMIA's broader monsoon contingency and readiness strategy, the planned maintenance is meant to guarantee ongoing safety and smooth operations throughout the approaching wet season. Understanding the value of early notice, CSMIA sent out a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) six months in advance, giving airlines and other interested parties the time to modify their schedules and reduce customer discomfort.

The yearly maintenance of CSMIA's airside infrastructure, which covers more than 1,033 acres, is essential to preserving the functionality and health of its operational surfaces. In order to ensure safe landings and takeoffs during Mumbai's usual heavy monsoon rains, teams of technical experts and engineers will perform comprehensive inspections as part of the maintenance routine. These inspections will include assessing surface wear and tear, repairing runway markings, cleaning drainage systems, and putting preventive measures against waterlogging into place.

CSMIA will use cutting-edge monitoring technology to monitor the entire maintenance process in real-time, increasing the operation's accuracy and efficiency. To guarantee that the work is finished efficiently and within the allotted six hours, the airport management has also closely coordinated with a number of stakeholders, including airline operators and regulatory bodies.
