ICMR gives nod to Neeri’s Covid-19 testing through gargling samples
Many people are scared of giving their throat or nasal swab for covid testing as it is painful or irritating. But they will not have to go through this pain anymore. It is now possible to diagnose corona through a simple gargle.
The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri), Nagpur has come up with a unique innovation. This method is called 'Saline Gargle RT-PCR Test'. Notably, ICMR endorsed this research. This testing method will start from Nagpur and will be used all over the country.
Currently RTPCR is taken for testing by taking a swab through the nostrils or throat and inserting it into a tube containing the chemical. No RNA extraction is necessary as is the case with existing testing of samples. Even though the RT-PCR procedure remains the same, potentially the suspected patient can get the test result faster.
This new technique has been developed by Dr. Krishna Khairnar of the Department of Virology, Neeri. This research is considered useful in terms of corona testing. Dr Khairnar claimed that the testing process would eliminate the need for RNA extraction and that corona reports would be available in less time. He said that with the approval of ICMR, the process would start in Nagpur and the laboratories in the city would be informed and assisted in this regard.
“A person coming for the test will be given a wide-mouth conical tube with 5 millilitres of sterile saline in it. He has to gargle the saline for 15 seconds and then rinse for another 15 seconds. After this, he has to put the liquid back in the tube and shut the lid properly,” said Khairnar.
Chek out the benefits of 'Saline Gargle RT-PCR Test'
- - Nose and throat swabs will be less troublesome.
- - Trained health workers will not be required.
- - Samples can be given in the laboratory by gargling with saline water at home.
- - No need to stand in long queues for inspection. Therefore, crowding will also be avoided.
- - Corona's report will be available in less time.
- - Medical waste generated while collecting samples will be reduced.
