Nagpur, Oct 16

A mother and daughter committed suicide in Ambazari lake on Thursday evening. The deceased have been identified as Savita Raju Khangar (45) and Ruchita Raju Khangar (20), resident of Wathoda Layout, Vidya Nagar.

Savita’s husband Raju works in a private news channel and Raju and his younger brothers family stay together. Savita and Raju’s younger brother have not been on good terms and always picked up fights with each other. Whenever they use to fight, Savita use to leave home and come back again after a few hours. Savita again had a tiff with her brother-in-law on Thursday, with regards to repairing of fan.

During the fight, Savita was beaten by her brother-in-law and abused badly, due to which Savita, along with her two daughters Ruchika and Shwetal (22) left home around 5.30 pm from Vidya Nagar and walked till Ambazari lake. They had already made up their mind to commit suicide and reached Ambazari lake around 7 pm. All the three were sitting near the lake for two hours. There is police patrolling near Ambazari overflow, but as there is no light, they could not spot Savita and her daughters. When the relatives were trying to reach Savita, her mobile was coming switched off. After sitting for 2-2.5 hours at the lake, Savita and Ruchita went and jumped in the lake. Shwetal tried to stop them, but they pushed her and jumped.

Shwetal immediately informed her relatives about the incident, who informed Ambazari police. The police immediately reached the spot and took out both the bodies with the help of divers, but both of them had died by then. Police questioned Shwetal and she narrated the whole incident. The Ambazari police has registered a case of accidental death on Shwetal’s statement.

Both Ambazari and Futala lakes are becoming suicide spots. Two day back, two people were prevented from jumping into Futala lake. The embankment of Ambazari lakes is 800 meter long and there are no lights. The police has given requisition to NMC and the earlier NIT to lit up the area, but no steps were taken in this regard. Due to darkness, the police could not spot the mother and daughters.

Shwetal in mental trauma

Ruchita’s sister Shwetal is in a mental shock, as she saw her mother and sister commit suicide in front of her. Had she informed the police or relatives in time, this incident could have been averted.
