Nashik city will soon come under tight security as the police, along with the Smart City initiative, plan to bring the city under the watch of 1,750 CCTV cameras. Police Commissioner Sandeep Karnik said that these cameras will become operational within the next two months.
The work of connecting these cameras through underground cables is in its final stage, being carried out in collaboration with BSNL. So far, 600 cameras from various private companies and 1,750 cameras through the Police Commissionerate and Smart City have been installed. However, they are not yet fully operational due to pending cable connections.
The Police Commissionerate has installed 650 cameras using funds from the City Surveillance Unit (CSU) under Smart City. In addition, 1,100 cameras have been installed under the Smart City project itself. These will soon be brought online as cable work nears completion.
Meanwhile, for the upcoming Kumbh Mela, 3,000 more CCTV cameras have been approved. The installation process for these is expected to begin later this year.
Commissioner Karnik added that once the network of 1,750 cameras is live, nearly half the city will be under surveillance. “This will make it easier to catch criminals and help prevent crimes,” he said. The initiative marks a significant step in making Nashik a safer and smarter city.
