Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan and several religious leaders have strongly criticized Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray over his comments on the Kumbh Mela and river pollution.
Raj Thackeray, during an MNS anniversary rally in Pimpri, questioned the cleanliness of rivers in India. He raised concerns about the water quality of rivers where lakhs of devotees bathe during the Kumbh Mela. Thackeray's remarks, questioning whether faith has any real significance, triggered strong reactions from religious leaders and political figures.
The Kumbh Mela, a centuries-old tradition, witnesses lakhs of devotees taking a holy dip in the Godavari River. Religious leaders have emphasized that this practice is based on both faith and scientific reasoning. Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Shri Mahant Sudhirdas Maharaj from the Nirvani Akhara condemned Thackeray's statement, calling it an insult to the faith of 65 crore people who participate in the Kumbh Mela. He stated that if Thackeray considers himself progressive by criticizing Hindu traditions, then his perspective is misguided.
Responding to Thackeray's concerns, Minister Girish Mahajan assured that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent pollution in the Godavari River during the Kumbh Mela. He explained that with crores of people gathering at once, minor challenges may arise, but authorities are actively addressing them. He emphasized that bathing does not pollute the river, and efforts are being made to ensure that sewage does not mix with the river water.
Mahajan also highlighted the government's initiatives to speed up the construction and renovation of sewage treatment plants to keep the Godavari clean. He acknowledged that Thackeray may have a different opinion but stressed that the Kumbh Mela holds deep religious significance.
Meanwhile, Mahajan commented on the growing support for his party across Maharashtra. He mentioned that earlier, people would personally reach out to him, but now the support has grown so much that he is unable to keep track of all the connections being made across the state.
As the debate continues, the Kumbh Mela preparations in Nashik are underway, with authorities ensuring that both religious sentiments and environmental concerns are taken into consideration.
