Nashik: NMC Plans to Add 180 More Speed Bumps Amid Rising Concerns Over Citizens' Health Problems

Even as the city struggles with pothole-ridden roads, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is now considering adding 180 more speed bumps to its streets. The Road Safety Committee, which had already approved 333 speed bumps last year, is set to hold a meeting under the Commissioner’s chairmanship to discuss these new proposals.

Speed bumps have been installed across highways, main roads, and smaller streets to reduce accidents. However, citizens have raised concerns that these speed bumps, often built without following proper guidelines, are leading to health issues such as back, neck, and spine problems. The Indian Road Congress has specific standards for speed bumps, but in many areas of Nashik, these guidelines are not being followed, leading to discomfort and even accidents.

Despite complaints from residents about poorly placed and unscientific speed bumps, the Road Safety Committee had given the green light for 333 speed bumps in June last year. Since then, various local organizations and public representatives have requested additional speed bumps at 180 accident-prone spots across the city. Among these, 66 locations have been identified as particularly dangerous, and their proposals will be reviewed in the upcoming meeting.

Beyond installing speed bumps at accident-prone locations, the NMC is also planning additional road safety measures, including:

Zebra crossings and speed tables to improve pedestrian safety

Thermoplastic paint stripes, cat eyes, and road markers for better nighttime visibility

Hazard markers, notice boards, and ‘No Parking’ signs to regulate traffic

Action against road encroachments at major intersections and market areas  

The Road Safety Committee will discuss these proposals in detail to ensure that safety measures do not create new challenges for motorists and pedestrians alike.
