Nashik Violence: 25 Arrested, Over 1,400 Booked After Clash Over Dargah Demolition in Kathegalli
The Nashik Police have taken strict action following the violent clash that erupted before the removal of an unauthorized dargah built on river land in Kathegalli. As of now, 25 people have been arrested, and cases have been registered against 1,400 to 1,500 individuals involved in the incident.
The violence broke out late Tuesday night (April 15), when a large crowd gathered to protest the demolition of the dargah. The situation turned tense and violent as stones were pelted at the police. The attack left 21 police officers and personnel injured, while around 25 to 30 police vehicles were damaged by the mob.
So far, police have identified 57 suspects. Among the 25 arrested are political figures including Congress leader Hanif Bashir, Shiv Sena (Thackeray faction) member Nilofar Sheikh, and Sharad Pawar-led NCP’s Arif Haji Patel Sheikh. All have been charged with conspiracy, spreading false information, and direct or indirect involvement in the violence. One of the suspects is a minor and is being handled under juvenile laws.
According to the police, the attack appears to have been pre-planned. Stones, bricks, and tiles used during the violence have been sent for forensic analysis. Investigations are ongoing using CCTV footage and viral videos from the scene. Many accused individuals have gone into hiding since the incident.
Nashik Police Commissioner has assured that all culprits will be traced and brought to justice. The police are continuing their search operations to nab the absconding accused.
