Ambedkar Jayanti, also known as Bhim Jayanti, is observed every year on April 14 to honor the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution and a champion of social justice. In 2025, the day falls on a Monday, and it is marked with tributes and celebrations across the nation, particularly in states like Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh.
Public Holiday Nationwide
The central government has declared April 14 as a public holiday in recognition of Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy. In several states, including Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, government offices will remain shut. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has officially announced a public holiday for all government offices in Delhi.
Bank Holiday Details
According to the Reserve Bank of India’s annual holiday calendar, banks will remain closed on April 14 in the majority of Indian states. The list includes:
States with Bank Closures: Tripura, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, Jharkhand, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Chandigarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam.
States Where Banks Remain Open: Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland, New Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Meghalaya, and Himachal Pradesh. Despite the closure of physical branches, digital banking services such as internet banking, SMS banking, and WhatsApp banking will remain available for both financial and non-financial transactions.
Dry Day Observed in Some Regions
In observance of Ambedkar Jayanti, April 14 has been declared a dry day in Maharashtra, Bengaluru, and Delhi. This means the sale of alcohol will be prohibited in these regions for the day.
Stock Market Closed
Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain closed on April 14. Trading across all segments will be suspended, affecting both retail and institutional investors.
