A senior engineer narrowly escaped drowning Saturday while inspecting a damaged embankment along the surging Ganges River in Bihar's Bhagalpur district. Anwar Jamal, chief engineer of the Flood Control Division in Katihar, was inspecting the embankment in Gopalpur Bind Toli when he slipped and fell into the river.

A quick-thinking State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team, stationed nearby, immediately launched a rescue operation. Four to five speedboats carrying SDRF personnel reached Jamal and pulled him to safety.
