"I am sure the government will step in to undo this. Just because someone is in possession of leaflets, none can be called as a Maoist," said CPI-M politburo member Karat while speaking to the media at Kochi.

The two students of law and journalism, Allen Shuaib and Thaha Fazil, both full time CPI-M workers, were arrested on Saturday after the police recovered leaflets that supported the Maoist movement besides condemning the Union government's action in Jammu and Kashmir, from them.

The two are lodged in a jail near here and their families are now getting ready to approach the Kerala High Court, seeking bail, after a court here rejected their bail plea on Wednesday.

Leader of opposition Ramesh Chennithala told the media in the state capital that he wants to find out what is Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's reaction to Karat's statement.

Meanwhile the Kozhikode South area committee of the CPI-M, to which the two arrested youths are attached, had an urgent meeting which was overseen by district CPI-M secretary P. Mohanan, who later said that he has got nothing to share with the media at the moment.

Sources in the know of things said that the CPI-M is likely to take action against the two youths.
