The central government has declared April 14, the birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, as a public holiday in recognition of his contributions to society and the Indian Constitution. Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat announced the decision on social media platform X. "The architect of the Constitution, the one who established a new era of equality in society, our revered Baba Saheb, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, will now have a public holiday on his birth anniversary," he wrote.
As per the notice, all central government offices and industrial institutions across India will remain closed on Monday, April 14. All ministries and departments of the Government of India have been directed to inform the concerned authorities about this decision.
Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh. He played a key role in drafting India’s Constitution and was a leading advocate for the rights of Dalits and marginalized communities.
Dr Ambedkar was also the first Law and Justice Minister of independent India. He worked toward social reforms and economic policies aimed at uplifting backward communities and made significant contributions as an educationist and economist. After his death on December 6, 1956, Ambedkar was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. His death anniversary is observed as Mahaparinirvan Diwas.
