DU law students protest police assault on fellow student

Students of Delhi University's Law Faculty gathered outside the Adarsh Nagar Police station after it a fellow student alleged that he was abused and assaulted by police there.

Pramod Kumar, a third year student, claimed that some personnel of Adarsh Nagar Police Station abused him with casteist remarks and even subjected him to third-degree torture.

In his complaint, he said that on around 1 p.m. on August 25, he got a call from Adarsh Nagar police station saying that three persons, including his nephew Amar, had been arrested and when he reached the station and asked the reason for their arrest, police started to thrash him and hit him in his genital area.

He said that he had sent a complaint to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, North West, and also tried to lodge a FIR at Maurice Nagar police station, but police there told him that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of Adarsh Nagar police station.

According to the sources, Pramod Kumar's nephew was earlier booked in March under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and was sent to jail. He was out on bail. Further his nephew is also accused in a case of extortion and under the Arms Act, regarding which an FIR has been lodged at Adarsh Nagar police station.

DCP, Northwest, Vijayanta Arya said an FIR has been registered on the complaint of Pramod Kumar under relevant sections including the SC/ST Act and a probe has been initiated.
