An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 on the Richter Scale struck the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, August 20. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the tremors were felt at 6:45 AM (IST). The epicentre was located at latitude 34.17 North and longitude 74.16 East and at a depth of 5 kilometres.
There have been no reports of earthquake-related injuries or damage as of now. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), NCS said, "EQ of M: 4.9, On: 20/08/2024 06:45:57 IST, Lat: 34.17 N, Long: 74.16 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir."

Strong tremors jolted parts of Jammu and Kashmir in the early hours of Tuesday, as an earthquake of magnitude 4.9 struck Baramulla district. Tremors were also felt in parts of Pakistan, including Islamabad.

Panic among the people as they rushed out of their houses as the earthquake struck around 6:45 am. Within seconds, "earthquake" became the top trending hashtag on Twitter, with users sharing how they felt the tremors. Several people in Jammu and Kashmir shared videos from their homes showing shaking ceiling fans and also sharing CCTV footage.
