Chennai, Nov 3 Chennai Air Customs on Tuesday said they have arrested a person at the airport here and seized gold worth Rs 38.9 lakh from his possession.

In a statement issued here, Customs said one Shahul Hameed, 40, of Pasipattinam, Tamil Nadu who arrived from Dubai by an Indigo flight was intercepted at the exit on the suspicion of carrying gold.

On being searched, four packets of gold paste weighing 850 grams were recovered from his hand bag.

On extraction 740 grams of gold of 24K purity valued at Rs 38.9 lakh was recovered and seized under the Customs Act.

Earlier on Monday, one Mohamed Sajamkhan Kalandar Ayubkhan, 23, of Ramanathapuram, who arrived from Dubai by an Indigo flight was intercepted at the exit.

When questioned he confessed to carrying gold paste bundles stuffed in his rectum, Customs said.

On being searched five bundles of gold paste weighing 437 grams were recovered from his rectum.

A total of 375 grams of gold valued at Rs 19.70 lakh was recovered after extraction.

In total 1.11 kg gold of 24K purity valued at Rs 58.6 lakh was recovered and seized under the Customs Act 1962.
