Good Friday 2020: History, Importance and Significance of the Holy Day

Good Friday is a Christian holiday observed to commemorate the crucifixion of Lord Jesus Christ and his death. The day is also known as Great Friday, Holy Friday, or Great Friday. On Good Friday, members of many Christian denominations including Catholics observe fast and attend church service. According to Gregorian calendar, the date varies from one year to another. This year it will be observed on April 10.Good Friday lies ahead of Easter Sunday (April 12). 

The term Good Friday is not quoted in the Holy Bible, but religious texts tell us how Jesus was betrayed by Judas which led to his arrest. He was scolded by Roman soldiers after bring nailed to a cross which he was asked to carry to his site of the crucifixion. The word good in Good Friday stands for holy or pious. In several parts of the world, including India, Good Friday is a public holiday. It's a day to remember the sacrifices made by Lord Jesus. Church services are organised in the afternoon. Priest and people who visit the church wear black and white attire.  The same coloured cloth is used to cover paintings, cross, and statues in churches and some homes to signify mourning. Even candles are not lit on this day.
