Gorakhpur Mosque Demolition: GDA Issues Notice to Demolish Abu Huraira Masjid in Uttar Pradesh

Following the demolition of the Madani Masjid in Kushinagar, the Gorakhpur Development Authority (GDA) is now preparing to take action against the Abu Huraira Mosque, citing illegal construction. The GDA alleges that the mosque was built without an approved map and issued a demolition notice on February 15. The matter is currently under review in the Gorakhpur Commissioner’s Court, with the next hearing scheduled for February 25.

In 2024, municipal land encroachment at Ghosh Company Chowk was cleared, leading to the demolition of a mosque. Later, the municipal corporation allocated land nearby, where a new mosque was constructed. The GDA, however, claims that the structure was built without the necessary approvals.

The demolition order, issued in the name of Shoaib Ahmed, son of the late mutawalli, mandates self-demolition within 15 days. Failure to comply will result in action by the authority, which will also recover the demolition costs.

Shoaib Ahmed stated that he had submitted a written reply to the GDA on February 14 and appeared for the hearing on February 15. He argued that the municipal board had approved the land allocation in its sixth meeting and that structures under 60 square meters do not require separate map approval. An appeal has been filed with the divisional commissioner, and the case will be heard on February 25.
