Chandigarh Administrator and Punjab Governor V.P. Singh Badnore and local Member of Parliament Kirron Kher, who were to attend the programme where Gupta faced protest, cancelled their visit.

As Gupta was speaking at a seminar on empowering women being organised by the National Commission for Women, protesters, comprising women students, started shouting slogans. They were whisked away by the security from the seminar hall.

The protesters, some of them carrying posters, were condemning the attack.

Gupta described the protest as "a pre-planned act" by some student wings belonging to a particular faction.

Protester Gagandeep Kaur said it was sad that the political leaders on hand were talking about empowering the women at the seminary and on the other they were trying to gag voice of the women by badly injuring Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union chief Aishe Ghosh.

"We will not allow such forces to create mischief on the campuses," she added.

National Commission for Women President Rekha Sharma, who was also present, said Home Minister Amit Shah had already inquired about the situation in the campus.

"I will also shortly meet the injured students," she said.

In a separate protest, a large number of local residents, comprising artistes, students and literary people, gathered at the shopping complex Plaza in Sector 17 amidst rains to express their anger against the assault of students.

According to reports, miscreants entered the JNU campus on Sunday evening and beat up students and professors, leaving at least 37 people injured.
