"This year, the celebrations are different as the public mood and involvement in nation-building is on a new high, as reflected in the quantum jump in functions in mohallas and colonies of Agra. All crossings in the city are decked up, with banners, flags and flowery decorations, and you see hundreds of groups of youngsters on mobikes rallying through the city streets with flags," said activist Shravan Kumar Singh.

Earlier, Independence Day functions used to be confined to educational institutions, but this time "it looks like a real people's festival, he added.

The festive mood is heightened by Raksha Bandhan celebrations also, said home-maker Padmini.

The Agra Municipal Corporation set the mood on August 14 when more than 800 electric-poles were lit in tri-colours, radiating the myriad colours of nationalist fervour.

"Scrapping of 370 has unleashed and unshackled the pent-up emotions as a message has gone global that India is one from Kashmir to Kanyakumari," said Ranjan Sharma, a senior citizen.

The Divisional Commissioner's residence, the Agra Collectorate, the municipal corporation building have all been colourfully illuminated.

Major Independence Day functions were held on Thursday at the police lines, university campus, St. Peter's College ground, at the Central Hindi Institute, Shaheed Smarak in Sanjay Place.

The national tri-colour was hoisted at one of the crossings at mid-night, re-enacting the events of August 15, 1947, according to Anil Sharma, president of the Civil Society.

At the Bhagwan Talkies crossing, hundreds of members of India Rising organised a colourful programme.
