Karnataka Bandh: Will Schools, Colleges, and Govt Offices Remain Shut On March 22?

A statewide bandh has been called in Karnataka on March 22, 2025, by pro-Kannada organizations, led by the Kannada Okkoota, to protest linguistic tensions in Belagavi and the proposed Greater Bengaluru Governance (GBG) Bill. The 12-hour shutdown is scheduled from 6 am to 6 pm and is expected to disrupt public transport, cab services, and daily activities across the state. 

Reasons for the Bandh:

Assault Incident: The bandh is in response to the alleged assault on a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus conductor by pro-Marathi groups in Belagavi for not speaking Marathi. 

GBG Bill Opposition: Protesters are opposing the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, which proposes dividing Bengaluru into multiple administrative zones. 

Employment Concerns: There are concerns over Kannadigas not receiving adequate employment opportunities in key industries. 

Impact on Bengaluru:

Bengaluru is likely to experience significant disruptions due to the bandh. While no official closure orders have been issued, various transport and business associations have extended their support, indicating possible shutdowns. 

What's Closed:

Public Transport: BMTC and KSRTC services could be affected, though official confirmation is pending. Private cab and auto services are also likely to be impacted, as some unions have expressed support for the bandh. 

Educational Institutions: Several schools and colleges have declared holidays as a precautionary measure. Parents and students should verify the status with their respective institutions. 

Businesses: Markets, shopping complexes, and local stores in areas like Chickpet, KR Market, and Gandhi Bazaar may remain closed. 

Government Offices: State government offices will be open; however, attendance could be low due to transport challenges. 

What's Open:

Namma Metro: The metro will operate as usual, but first and last-mile connectivity via autos and cabs might be a concern. 

Essential Services: Hospitals, pharmacies, and essential health services will function without restrictions. 

Trains and Flights: Train and flight services are expected to operate as scheduled, but passengers should plan their commute accordingly. 

Citizens are advised to stay updated on the situation and plan their activities accordingly to minimize inconvenience during the bandh.
