The police immediately dispatched personnel to his house and those of his relatives, which revealed the murder. Five were found dead while Afhan's mother, one of the victims, was seen battling for her life.
Police said the accused went on a murder spree from 10 am to 6 pm. His first victim was his grandmother, who lived 25 km away. He brutally murdered 80-year-old Salma Beevi before heading to his uncle's house which was nine km away. He killed his uncle Latheef and his wife Sajitha Beevi before returning home. Afhan then took his 13-year-old brother Ahsan out for a meal, treating him to his favourite Arabian food before returning home with home. He then hammered the child to death and attacked his mother Shami, according to the police.
He also managed to lure Farsana, his girlfriend, to his home before striking her down with the hammer. He also switched on the LPG cylinder to ensure the house exploded. Afhan then went to the police station to confess. Shocked police officials immediately detained him, but in the melee, the accused consumed poison inside the station. He was rushed to a nearby police station where he is said to be undergoing treatment.
Police said they are yet to uncover the motive behind the murder. They suspect that Afan may have been under the influence of drugs while committing the crime. "Though there are speculations that he may have faced a financial crisis, it has not been confirmed yet. It is also unclear whether he used the same weapon on all of his relatives," SP Sudarshan told Manorama Online. Meanwhile, neighbours and relatives claimed that Afan was a good natured, mild mannered and soft spoken person. None of the relatives or neighbours could believe that the accused could commit the murders.A woman who runs a tea-shop near Afan's home told a TV channel on Tuesday that the accused loved his brother and used to take care of him.
