Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) has been renamed as Ministry of Education. The announcement to be made later today.

Union Minister Prakash Javdekar and HRD Minister RP Nishank will be holding a press conference at 4:00 PM, where the announcement is likely to be made.

According to sources, the change in the name of the ministry has been proposed in order to focus on education and learning.

The HRD ministry name was adopted in 1985, during the tenure of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, as it was changed from ministry of edcuation.

The changing of the ministry name was initially recommended by a group of experts, led by former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan. Same was also demanded by RSS affiliates who have previously stated that former PM Rajiv Gandhi had changed the name of the education ministry to HRD ministry in September 1985 under the advice of some “people who may have misled him”.
