NIA Files Supplementary Chargesheet Against Five In 2022 Coimbatore Temple Blast

NIA has filed a supplementary chargesheet against five additional individuals in connection with the ISIS-inspired car bomb blast that occurred near Hindu temple in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu in October 2022 in which the suicide bomber who perpetrated the blast was killed. NIA has charged Sheikh Hidayathullah, Umar Faaruq, Pavas Rahman, Sharan Mariappan and Aboo Hanifa for their involvement in terror financing and other activities linked with the terror attack that had targeted a Hindu temple, Arulmigu Kottai Sangameshwar Thirukovil, in Coimbatore in October 2022. With this, a total of 17 have been accused chargesheeted in the case so far, said NIA

The five newly chargesheeted accused are Sheikh Hidayathullah, Umar Faaruq, Pavas Rahman, Sharan Mariappan, and Aboo Hanifa. According to the NIA, they have been implicated in terror financing and other activities related to the planning and execution of the attack. This brings the total number of accused in the case to 17. The agency stated that these individuals were part of a larger conspiracy inspired by the terrorist organization ISIS, aiming to instigate communal unrest and promote extremist ideology in the region.

The blast had caused widespread concern and led to heightened security measures across Coimbatore and other parts of Tamil Nadu. The NIA took over the investigation shortly after the incident due to its national security implications. Further legal proceedings are underway, and the NIA continues to probe deeper into the wider network of individuals potentially involved in promoting ISIS-linked activities within the country.
