Mahatma Gandhi's great-granddaughter, Nilamben Parikh, passed away at her residence in Navsari on Tuesday morning. She was 92. Parikh is known for her famous book about the complicated relationship that Mahatma Gandhi shared with his oldest son and her grandfather, Harilal.
Nilamben spent her entire life working with tribal women by educating them until her retirement. The daughter of Ramiben, who was the eldest of the five children of Harilal Gandhi and his wife, Gulab (Chanchal), Nilamben was known for her silent strength, even through her frail structure, as well as her loyalty for Khadi, reported Indian Express. Her funeral procession will depart from her residence at 8 AM, and the last rites will be performed at Veerwal Crematorium.
Gujarat cabinet minister Raghavji Patel expressed his condolences over Nilamben's death. In a post on X, Patel wrote, "With the passing away of Nilamben Parikh, the great-granddaughter of revered Mahatma Gandhi, society has suffered a great loss of a true Gandhian personality and social worker."
"She gave selfless service throughout her life for women's welfare and human welfare. May God rest his soul in peace and give his family the strength to bear this grief. Om Shanti," he said.
