Nipah Virus Death: Masks Made Compulsory In Kerala's Malappuram After 23-Year-Old Succumbs To Infection

In response to the death of a 23-year-old from Malappuram due to Nipah virus infection, authorities have mandated the use of masks across the district starting Monday, with the requirement to remain in effect until further notice. Health and revenue officials are currently tracing the deceased’s route and contact list to ensure all Nipah virus protocols are adhered to.

The young man, a student from Bengaluru and a native of Chembaram near Naduvath in Wandoor, passed away at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna last Monday. Initial tests at Kozhikode Medical College confirmed suspicion of Nipah, which was later validated by the Pune virology lab.
 

In response, district authorities have implemented stringent measures in and around the Thiruvali panchayat, including four of its wards and one ward from the neighboring Mampad panchayat. Local theaters and educational institutions in these areas have been ordered to shut until further notice. Public gatherings are also prohibited, and any events must strictly follow Nipah virus protocols.The deceased had recently returned from Bengaluru with a leg injury and developed a fever. After seeking treatment at two local clinics without improvement, he was admitted to Perinthalmanna hospital, where he ultimately died.
