Parliament passes CAB, 125 votes in favor while 99 against

The Parliament on Wednesday approved the Bill amid widespread protests in the northeastern states, including Assam, over the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB). The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed this bill after detailed discussion. The House rejected the opposition's proposal and amendments to send the bill to the Select Committee. 125 votes were cast in favor of the bill while 99 members voted against it. 

Soon after the bill was passed in Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a historic day for India and its values ​​of compassion and brotherhood. He tweeted that the bill "will remove the sufferings of many people who have suffered for years." Modi thanked all the members who supported the bill in the Rajya Sabha. Home Minister Amit Shah claimed that the Citizenship Amendment Bill is completely in accordance with the constitutional provisions and "does not take citizenship of anyone,".
