The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday elected first-time MLA Rekha Gupta as the new chief minister of Delhi. The decision comes as the party returns to power in the national capital after 27 years. BJP secured 48 seats in the 70-member assembly.

Gupta’s name was announced at the BJP legislature party meeting. The meeting was attended by observers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Om Prakash Dhankhar. A former president and general secretary of the Delhi University Students' Union, she has also served as general secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha in Delhi. She was a member of the party’s national executive committee.

Gupta began her political career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad at Daulat Ram College in 1992. She became president of the Delhi University Students’ Union in 1996. She actively raised student-related issues.

She was elected as a councillor from North Pitampura in 2007. She worked to improve public amenities including libraries and parks. She was re-elected in 2012 and later served as the mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation. This role helped her gain administrative experience.

Gupta launched the Sumedha Yojana to support female students from economically weaker backgrounds in higher education. As head of the Women Welfare and Child Development Committee, she focused on women’s empowerment initiatives.

In the 2025 Delhi assembly election, Gupta won from the Shalimar Bagh constituency. She secured 68,200 votes.
