Zero Shadow Day 2025: Bengaluru Will Witness No Shadow Day on April 24, Know Exact Timings
Bengaluru will be experiencing a rare astronomical event on April 24, when their will be no shadow. This celestial event wil took place around 12:17 pm. During this period upright objects like poles or people will not cast visible shadows. Scientists from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) confirmed this occurs as the sun passes directly overhead.
The phenomenon takes place when the sun reaches the zenith its highest point in the sky causing shadows to fall exactly beneath objects, making them nearly invisible. Zero Shadow Day, a phenomenon occurring twice annually between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer, causes upright objects to cast no shadow when the sun is directly overhead at noon.
According to Dr. Niruj Mohan Ramanujam of IIA's SCOPE division, Bengaluru typically experiences this in late April and mid-August. Other cities in the same geographical belt, such as Chennai and Mangaluru, observe it at different times due to the sun's northward movement towards the Tropic of Cancer. Dr. Ramanujam notes that a similar event happens when the sun reaches the Tropic of Cancer on June 21 during the summer solstice, marking the end of Uttarayana in the Hindu calendar.
