The Morbe Dam, Navi Mumbai's primary water source, currently holds enough reserves to sustain the city’s water needs. Even if the monsoon is delayed, residents do not need to worry about water shortages until August. As of now, the dam has sufficient water to last 149 days.
Despite this, the municipal corporation is urging citizens to use water judiciously. The city enjoys a 24-hour water supply from the Morbe Dam, which is owned by the municipal corporation and located in Khalapur Taluka.
Last year’s ample rainfall in the dam’s catchment area helped fill the reservoir to capacity, preventing a severe water shortage this season. However, other parts of the state are already experiencing water scarcity, with some cities near Navi Mumbai facing severe crises.
Water Supply Issues in Some Areas
In affected areas, residents are struggling with low water pressure and inadequate supply. Many households are now relying on water tankers, leading to growing frustration amid the ongoing crisis.
Water Shortage in MIDC Areas
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) region, which falls under the municipal corporation’s jurisdiction, has large slum settlements that depend on MIDC for their water supply. However, many residents in these areas receive insufficient water due to various reasons. Over the past two to three years, the issue has worsened, prompting citizens to demand an adequate and consistent water supply—especially during summer months.
Municipal Commissioner Urges Responsible Water Use
Despite the ample water storage in the dam, the municipal corporation emphasizes the importance of responsible water consumption. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has advised residents against washing housing society premises or vehicles with water hoses. He has also urged people to avoid wasting potable water and ensure that taps are not left running unnecessarily.
