Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has met its property tax collection target of Rs 800 crore for the financial year 2024-25, despite public holidays on March 29, 30, and 31 for Gudi Padwa and Eid. Civic officials worked relentlessly to maximize tax collection, said Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde.

To commemorate this achievement, the Property Tax Department symbolically raised a ‘Gudi’ at NMMC headquarters in Belapur on Gudi Padwa, signifying their commitment to financial discipline and civic development.

NMMC introduced several initiatives to encourage timely payments, including the ‘Abhay’ scheme launched on March 10, 2025, which provided a 50% waiver on penalties for overdue property tax. The corporation also implemented a new online tax payment system to streamline transactions. It launched stricter measures against defaulters, such as issuing notices, disconnecting water connections, and using traditional drumming outside non-payers' residences to raise awareness. Additionally, special tax payment counters remained open on holidays to facilitate payments.

Looking ahead, NMMC has set a higher target of Rs 1,200 crore for property tax collection in the financial year 2025-26. Commissioner Shinde expressed confidence that with strategic planning and execution, the corporation will achieve this goal, further strengthening Navi Mumbai’s financial stability.
