Navi Mumbai: In a significant move toward environmental conservation, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has announced a Rs 10,000 fine for individuals, institutions, and businesses that damage trees by nailing advertisements or installing electrical lighting.
According to recent observations, several trees across the city have been damaged due to such practices, leading to environmental degradation. To curb this, the NMMC Tree Authority passed Resolution No. 7461 on January 27, 2025, making it clear that any violation will result in a fine of Rs 10,000 per tree. The Assistant Commissioner of the Tree Authority will be responsible for taking action against violators.
Environmental Protection a Priority
Officials emphasize that nails, staples, and electrical fixtures weaken trees, making them prone to diseases and structural damage. Additionally, excessive lighting can disrupt the natural ecosystem, affecting birds and insects. "These acts not only harm individual trees but also impact the city's green cover and overall environment," an NMMC official stated.
Citizens Urged to Cooperate
The civic body has urged residents, businesses, and advertising agencies to refrain from such activities and support efforts to protect Navi Mumbai’s environment. "We appeal to all citizens to contribute to environmental conservation. Together, we can ensure a greener and healthier future for our city," the official added.
With this stringent action, the NMMC hopes to deter violators and promote responsible environmental practices among residents.
