Navi Mumbai Parking Policy in Final Stage, Proposal to Be Sent for State Govt Approval

Navi Mumbai: While cities across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region continue to battle haphazard parking arrangements, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is on the verge of finalizing a comprehensive parking policy aimed at addressing the city’s long-standing residential parking woes. The final proposal is expected to be submitted to the state government for approval shortly.

Unlike other urban bodies struggling with unregulated parking, NMMC has taken a proactive approach by laying the groundwork for a structured and resident-friendly parking policy. Acting on a directive from the Bombay High Court, the civic body had earlier formed a committee of experts to assess the residential parking needs across the city.

Back in December 2023, in response to Writ Petition No. 123/2016 filed by urban planning researcher and activist Sandeep Thakur, the High Court had directed NMMC to reevaluate its building regulations concerning parking. It instructed the Municipal Commissioner to set up an expert committee and provide suitable recommendations to the state government.

Accordingly, NMMC launched a public consultation process and collected suggestions and objections from residents via an online platform. The expert committee’s insights were also incorporated into the final draft of the policy.

Speaking to the media, senior officials from the corporation confirmed that the final report on Navi Mumbai's residential parking policy has been completed and will soon be forwarded to the state government for approval.

“The objective is to ensure a well-planned, efficient, and sustainable parking system in Navi Mumbai that takes into account both current demands and future growth,” said Somnath Kekan, Assistant Director of the Town Planning Department.

With this move, Navi Mumbai is set to become a model for urban planning and parking management in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Residents are hopeful that the new policy will bring much-needed relief from parking chaos and set a benchmark for other cities to follow.
