Navi Mumbai: As part of the ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse, the Navi Mumbai Police destroyed narcotics worth Rs 10 crore on February 26, 2025. The seized drugs, linked to 40 criminal cases, were disposed of at the government-approved Mumbai Waste Management Company in Taloja, Panvel, Raigad. The event was attended by Maharashtra’s Forest Minister, Ganesh Naik, and Panvel MLA, Prashant Thakur.

This operation is a continuation of the police's strong stance against drug-related crimes. In 2024, the Navi Mumbai Police had already destroyed narcotics worth Rs 1.61 crore in 39 cases. Over the past two years (2023-2024), authorities have registered 1,143 cases against drug offenders, arresting 1,743 individuals and seizing drugs worth Rs 56 crore. Among them, 111 African nationals were caught with narcotics valued at Rs 38 crore. Additionally, action was taken against 1,131 African and 224 Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in Navi Mumbai, with 1,128 of them being deported.

To intensify the crackdown on drug abuse, the Navi Mumbai Police launched the ‘Drug-Free Navi Mumbai’ campaign on January 8, 2025, under the leadership of Police Commissioner Shri Milind Bharambe. The launch event was graced by former Maharashtra Chief Minister Hon. Shri Devendra Fadnavis. Notably, Bollywood actor John Abraham has been appointed as the brand ambassador for the campaign.

While joining hands in the destruction, Naik said, “Navi Mumbai Police, under Commissioner Milind Bharambe’s leadership, is committed to creating a drug-free world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens, from youth to seniors, to stay away from drugs.”

The initiative focuses on educating citizens, particularly students from schools and colleges, about the dangers of drug abuse. Awareness drives are being conducted in educational institutions, residential societies, and railway station premises. The police have also introduced a helpline number (8828-112-112) to assist citizens with drug-related information and complaints. Additionally, banners and hoardings have been put up across the city to reinforce the message.

The drug disposal took place at the Mumbai Waste Management Company, which is authorized by the government for waste and evidence disposal from various departments.

With this continued crackdown, the Navi Mumbai Police reaffirm their commitment to making the city drug-free and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
