Navi Mumbai: For the first time, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has surpassed its target for property tax collection. During the financial year 2024-25, the civic body successfully collected 826.12 crore from property taxes. Building on this achievement, NMMC has set a target of Rs 1200 crore for the current financial year.
Apart from property tax collections, the civic body made remarkable progress across other sectors. This year, NMMC collected Rs 105.93 crore from water supply charges and Rs 381.90 crore from building permission fees. Of the 3,46,301 property tax holders, 3,13,197 paid their taxes in 2024-25. The largest collection came from the Ghansoli ward, contributing Rs 208.08 crore, which constitutes 25% of the total property tax collections.
Dr. Kailas Shinde, the Municipal Commissioner, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the citizens for their unwavering support in paying taxes, which contributes directly to the city’s sustainable growth. “The cooperation of the aware and responsible citizens of Navi Mumbai has been instrumental in achieving this revenue target. Their contributions are directly linked to the success of various civic services and infrastructure projects,” Dr. Shinde said.
A significant portion of the revenue came from the property tax department, which raised 826.12 crore, including 20.97 crore under the Abhay Scheme, which offered a 50% discount on penalties for outstanding property taxes. The water supply department also benefited from the scheme, contributing 105.93 crore from water bill payments.
In addition to property and water taxes, the Town Planning Department collected 381.90 crore from building permission fees, largely stemming from redevelopment project approvals. The Licensing Department also contributed 14.60 crore through the timely issuance of various licenses. In total, 28.04 crore was collected from local body taxes, with additional revenue flowing in from other municipal departments.
A key factor behind this success was the implementation of online payment facilities, which have been well-received by citizens. Dr. Shinde highlighted that making payment systems more accessible and user-friendly was a primary focus. The new online property tax collection system, supported by a mobile app, offers multiple payment options such as net banking, UPI, credit/debit cards, wallets, and QR codes, allowing citizens to pay their dues from the comfort of their homes.
The corporation has also taken proactive steps to address defaulters, issuing notices and even disconnecting water connections to ensure compliance. To further encourage timely payments, NMMC introduced the Abhay Scheme, offering a 50% penalty discount, which was also extended to water bill payments.
Acknowledging the importance of revenue for sustaining the city’s growth, Dr. Kailas Shinde stated, “Navi Mumbai is developing rapidly, and the revenue generated will help maintain high standards of civic services and infrastructure.” He also assured citizens that in the coming months, additional features such as the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) will be integrated into the online payment system to enhance convenience.
For the year 2024-25, property tax payments will be available as a single annual installment, with the option for citizens to pay in installments throughout the year. Water bill payments will also be available online, with all payment facilities supporting various methods.
