Panvel– Taking a major step towards sustainable urban development, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has installed 290 solar-powered lights across key locations, including highway bus stops, public toilets, gardens, crematoriums, and the Dehrang Dam premises. This eco-friendly initiative not only reduces reliance on conventional electricity but also ensures continuous illumination during power outages, enhancing safety and accessibility for residents.
Executed under the orders of Municipal Commissioner Mangesh Chitale and funded through the District Urban Development Fund, the project aligns with PMC’s vision of integrating renewable energy solutions into urban infrastructure.
With 17,000 electricity poles and 24,000 LED streetlights in the city, PMC allocated Rs 2.10 crore from the 2023-24 budget for solar-powered lighting. The installation aims to provide an alternative light source during power outages, ensuring safety at critical locations. City Engineer Sanjay Katekar and Electricity Department Head Pritam Patil supervised the project.
The newly installed solar lights, placed on six-meter and eight-meter-high poles, include 45-watt and 60-watt lamps, respectively. The contractor company will handle maintenance and repairs for five years. Additionally, the Dehrang Dam area has been illuminated with 30 solar lights.
“This project ensures safety and accessibility, especially for women travelers and those using public facilities at night,” said an official from Civic Engineering Department, adding that the PMC has also initiated a Rs 10 crore project to install high-mast 64-watt lights, enhancing urban lighting and safety.
