Residents of Turbhe have lost patience over persistent power outages and staged a protest on Friday night, demanding immediate improvements in the electricity supply. From sleepless nights to disrupted studies, residents are bearing the brunt of the summer heat, made worse by frequent power cuts.
A delegation also met Forest Minister and Airoli MLA Ganesh Naik at his Janta Darbar to raise concerns over the ongoing issue.
Shubhangi Patil, a former corporator, said that residents have been experiencing frequent power cuts for the past two months. “Almost every part of Turbhe is affected. The residents are unable to sleep at night due to the scorching heat,” she said. Patil added that in 2021, residents had protested to demand the conversion of a 22kV transformer to an 11kV one to improve the supply. Although the request was sanctioned, there has been no visible progress. There was also a demand to replace outdated cables, but even after four years, the situation remains unchanged.

Frustrated by the lack of electricity, residents took to the streets on Friday. “We are facing four to five hours of power cuts daily. In this heat, students are unable to study,” said Kasim Khan, a resident. The protest disrupted traffic briefly before police intervened and cleared the road after speaking to the protesters.
At the Janta Darbar, Patil urged Minister Naik to take swift action. Responding to the concerns, Naik instructed MSEDCL officials to replace the faulty transformer and old cables, and to ensure an uninterrupted power supply in the area.
Patil further said she would visit the MSEDCL office on Monday to follow up. “Whether it takes 10 days or a month, if the transformer and cables are not changed, I will lead a protest at Turbhe Chowk,” she warned.
