Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra returned to competition in triumphant fashion on Tuesday, securing his first gold medal at the Paavo Nurmi Games. The Olympic and world champion uncorked a throw of 85.97 meters in the third attempt to lead the field for most of the contest.
Chopra, who earned silver at the 2022 edition of the Games, was sidelined for a month due to a minor adductor niggle. He showcased his resilience with a strong showing, surpassing a competitive field that included 19-year-old German prodigy Max Dehning, the youngest member of the prestigious 90-meter club.
Finnish athlete Toni Keranen secured the silver medal with a best throw of 84.19 meters, while his compatriot and defending champion Oliver Helander settled for bronze with a 83.96-meter effort.
The 26-year-old Chopra entered the competition following a runner-up finish at the Doha Diamond League and a gold medal at the Federation Cup in Bhubaneswar last month. He took a brief break after experiencing discomfort in his adductor muscles.
