Coronavirus Lockdown: Hiring activity dips 61% in May in India

The country has been under lockdown for the past three months due to the corona virus infection. As a result, the number of new jobs in various sectors of the country has come down drastically, job portal Naukri.com said on Monday.

The decline was led by metros wherein Kolkata declined by 68 per cent, followed by Delhi (-67 per cent) and Mumbai (-67 per cent).

There was an across the board decline in hiring at varied experience levels with the entry-level experience bands (0 to 3 years experience) witnessing the sharpest decline of 66 per cent.

Young employees have suffered the most in terms of experience. Recruitment of primary level and senior level officers has declined by 66 per cent and 62 per cent respectively. At the middle management level, the proportion of those playing the role decreased by 55%.

The May decline in hiring was led by hotel, restaurant, travel and airlines industries (-91 per cent), followed by retail (-87 per cent), auto/ancillary (-76 per cent), and BFSI (-70 per cent).

'The extension of the lockdown has resulted in a continued decline in hiring activity for the third consecutive month,' said Pawan Goyal, Chief Business Officer, Naukri.com.

New appointments in hotels, restaurants, tourism and air transport declined by 91 per cent.

The retail sector saw a decline of 87 per cent.

Jobs in the auto and ancillary sectors declined by 76 per cent.

Accounting, taxation and finance declined by 69 per cent.

New appointments in BPO, ITES, CRM, transcription sector declined by 63 per cent.

Pharma, biotech, clinical research saw a 48 per cent decline in new recruits.

IT-software, software services sector saw a 54 per cent decline in new hiring.

In the insurance sector, new appointments fell by 55 per cent.

Kolkata - 68 per cent, Delhi NCR - 67 per cent, Mumbai - 67 per cent, Chennai - 63 per cent, Hyderabad - 63 per cent, Pune - 63 per cent, Bangalore - 58 per cent.
