Siddaramaiah comes from a farming family. It is a village tradition that a family acquiring land for a Siddharameshwar or Shiva temple should offer one of their sons as the veera makkalu or brave son of the temple. That is why the father donated Siddaramaiah to the temple.

Siddaramaiah completed his BSc in Law from the University of Mysore. Since his college days, Siddaramaiah became famous for his speaking style. Seeing the talent of Siddaramaiah, senior lawyer Nanjundaswamy appointed him from Mysore Taluka.

In 1985, at the age of just 38, Siddaramaiah became a minister. But in 1989 he lost in the assembly elections. He then made a comeback and became the Deputy Chief Minister in 1996 while in the Janata Dal. After that in 2004, he again joined JDS and Congress.

Siddaramaiah was expelled from the party after falling out with JDS chief HD Deve Gowda. He considered forming his own party, but in 2008, Siddaramaiah joined the Congress.

Siddaramaiah advocated for many years in the early days. Dr. Siddaramaiah in his student life. He was influenced by Ram Manohar Lohia's socialism. Political opponents also called him an atheist. On which they themselves had to explain.

I am not an atheist. I believe in following religious traditions and rituals. I have also been to Tirupati and Male Mahadeshwara Betta. But I don't want to go to the Himalayas in search of God. I look at everything from a scientific and religious point of view. Some people hate me.

Siddaramaiah's wife's name is Parvathi Siddaramaiah. Rakesh was their eldest son, who died aged 39 of multiple organ failure in Belgium. Younger son Yatindra is active in politics.

Siddaramaiah has also been in the limelight due to controversies. His government took a controversial decision to recommend religious minority status to Lingayats and Veerashaivas ahead of the 2018 assembly elections. This is one of the reasons for the defeat of his party in the assembly elections
