West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has said that 72 people have died so far in the state due to cyclone Amphan, of which 17 are from Kolkata alone. The chief minister said that all the deceased were victims of tree and house collapse and electrocution. Meanwhile, the CM has also announced Rs 2 lakh compensation for those killed in Cyclone Amphan. In a live video session hours after the cyclone made landfall and affected at least seven districts, the CM said she was “shocked” to see such a massive disaster. She stressed the cyclone’s “unexpected scale” several times during the session.  The damage to the state is worse than that it suffered due to coronavirus,” she said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the entire nation was in solidarity with Odisha and West Bengal as they fought to restore normalcy following the devastation caused by Cyclone Amphan. "My thoughts are with the people of Odisha as the state bravely battles the effects of Cyclone Amphan. Authorities are working on the ground to ensure all possible assistance to those affected. I pray the situation normalises at the earliest," the Prime Minister's first tweeted. Prime Minister Modi has assured of every possible help being provided to the two states which faced the havoc caused by the cyclone.
