Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor and Randeep Singh Surjewala retweeted a 2013 tweet on China that was posted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when the current PM was the CM of Gujarat. In the 2013 tweet, Narendra Modi had asked the then Manmohan Singh-led UPA 2 government why Indian forces were withdrawing from their own territory in Ladakh. "China withdraws its forces but I wonder why Indian forces are withdrawing from Indian territory? Why did we retreat?" Narendra Modi said in a tweet on May 13, 2013.

The tweet  was in response to a major standoff between India and China along the Line of Actual Control. To des-escalate tensions, both sides had agreed to pull back their troops from the disputed areas in Ladakh. The decision was taken after a series of talks between the two sides. Back then, India had said Chinese troops had entered nearly 10 km into the Indian territory on April 15, 2013, and put up tents in the Depsang valley in Ladakh. In a similar attempt to de-escalate tensions along the LAC, India and China on Sunday agreed to pull back their troops in the Galwan Valley and form a 'no man's land' to avoid further escalation of tensions. Since early May, India and China have been embroiled in a massive standoff in eastern Ladakh. On June 15, 20 Indian soldiers were killed in a violent face-off with Chinese soldiers.
